Neena Kumari

Team Leader (ODP), Emergency and Obstetric Theatres — Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

My name is Neena Kumari. I was born in Bradford and moved to Nottingham in 1994 at the age of 23 following my marriage. I am a proud British Punjabi Hindu and remain deeply connected to my heritage and cultural roots.

My parents and in-laws came to the UK during the 1950s and 1960s and, like many of their generation, faced significant challenges as they worked hard to build a new life. My parents worked in factories and later as shopkeepers while raising our family. Their resilience, determination and strong work ethic have been a significant inspiration throughout my life and have shaped my own values around hard work, service, family and community.

My NHS Journey

I began my NHS career in 2004 as a Band 2 Nursing Auxiliary and have progressed through the NHS over the years, qualifying as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) in 2007.

I am currently a Team Leader for the Emergency and Obstetric Theatres at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, City Hospital, where I lead a team of approximately 37 staff.

My role involves providing leadership and operational management across the department, including responsibility for:

  • Staff appraisals, training and professional development
  • Supporting staff wellbeing and managing sickness and attendance
  • Ensuring appropriate staffing and skill mix to maintain safe services
  • Ensuring the department has the equipment, resources and facilities required to deliver high-quality patient care
  • Supporting the delivery of 24/7 emergency theatre services
  • Developing and supporting staff to reach their professional potential
  • Maintaining high standards of patient safety, care and operational performance

My career progression from a Band 2 support role to a theatre leadership position has given me a valuable understanding of the NHS from different perspectives. It has also reinforced my belief that with the right support, encouragement and opportunities, people can achieve more than they may initially believe possible.

Qualifications

My professional and academic development includes:

  • BA in Applied Community Work and Social Care
  • Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) in Operating Department Practice
  • Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA)

These qualifications, together with my practical NHS experience, have helped me develop my leadership, management and people skills and have strengthened my understanding of the wider social, organisational and professional factors that influence healthcare.

My Role with BIAHPA

I became Treasurer of the British Indian Allied Health Professionals Association (BIAHPA) because I wanted to use my experience and develop new skills while contributing to something that I feel passionately about.

As an ODP and an Allied Health Professional, I recognise the importance of equity, representation, inclusion and professional development. I am particularly passionate about creating opportunities for British South Asian professionals to feel heard, valued, respected and supported within the workplace.

BIAHPA provides an important platform for Allied Health Professionals of Indian origin to connect, learn from one another, develop their careers and support each other. I wanted to be part of a leadership team that is prepared to challenge inequalities, promote positive change and create opportunities for people to thrive.

For me, being part of BIAHPA is also about giving back. My parents' generation worked hard to establish their lives in the UK, and I feel a strong sense of responsibility to help create opportunities for the generations that follow.

I believe that representation matters. People need to see individuals who look like them, understand their experiences and can demonstrate that progression and leadership are achievable. My own journey from a Band 2 NHS role to an experienced theatre leader has shown me the importance of opportunity, encouragement, education and supportive leadership.

Through BIAHPA, I hope to help create a professional community where Indian-origin AHPs can connect, develop, lead and succeed, while also supporting the wider NHS and health and social care workforce.

Ultimately, I want to contribute to an environment where our heritage is valued, our voices are heard, our professional contribution is recognized, and future generations of Allied Health Professionals are given confidence and opportunities to fulfil their potential.
